How to clean a Coffee Machine

2025-05-16

Cleaning your coffee machine regularly helps maintain flavor, efficiency, and hygiene. Here’s a step-by-step guide for cleaning most drip coffee makers. If you have an espresso machine or single-serve brewer (like a Keurig or Nespresso), let me know and I’ll tailor the instructions.

For Standard Drip Coffee Machines

Daily Cleaning (After Each Use):

Turn Off and Unplug the machine.

Discard Used Grounds and rinse the filter basket.

Wash Removable Parts (carafe, filter basket, and lid) with warm, soapy water.

Wipe the Exterior and warming plate with a damp cloth.

Deep Cleaning (Monthly or After 30 Uses):

This removes mineral build-up (especially important if you have hard water).

What You’ll Need:

White vinegar

Water

Clean cloth

Baking soda (optional for stubborn stains)

coffee machine

Steps:

Fill the Water Reservoir with a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water.

Start a Brew Cycle (without coffee grounds).

Halfway Through, turn off the machine and let it sit for 30 minutes.

Restart the Machine to finish the brew cycle.

Rinse Thoroughly by running 2–3 full cycles of clean water.

Clean the Carafe and Filter Basket again.

Extra Tips:

Descale more often if you notice slow brewing or bad taste.

Use a commercial descaler if vinegar smell/taste bothers you.

Clean the showerhead (water spout inside the lid) if accessible.
