How Membrane Switches Work:

- Layers of Membranes: Membrane keyboards typically have three main layers—a top membrane, a middle spacer layer, and a bottom membrane.

- Electrical Contact: Each key press pushes the top membrane down through the spacer, connecting with the bottom membrane and completing an electrical circuit.

- Signal Transmission: This circuit sends a signal to the computer, registering the key press.

Key Features of Membrane Switch Keyboards:

1. Cost-Effective: They are generally cheaper to produce than mechanical keyboards.

2. Quiet Typing: The membrane design makes these keyboards quieter.

3. Flat Design: Membrane switches allow for slimmer, low-profile keyboards, often used in laptops and some desktop keyboards.


Downsides:

- Tactile Feedback: They provide less tactile feedback compared to mechanical switches, making typing feel softer and sometimes less precise.

- Durability: Membrane switches tend to wear out faster and are less durable, as the membranes can degrade over time with frequent use.
